We are who we choose to be.

Every single day we are faced with tons of decision making, from what to eat, wear, watch on television, who to hang out with and cetera.

Have we ever thought for a second that these innocent looking small decisions are the reasons behind our jobs, health, relationships and even happiness?

I recently completed reading a book by Charles Duhigg titled, “ The power of habit.” This powerful book not only teaches us about how to change destructive habits, but also entertains us and educates us on how the science of habit works in our lives. It is mentioned in the book that three things make a habit: the trigger, the routine, and the reward.

Friendships

I am sure most of you are aware of the famous quote by Jim Rohan, “ You are the average of the five people you spend the most time with.” The quality of friends we choose to hang around with has a great impact on who we become.

If we take a look at most successful people like Mark Zuckerburg the co-founder of Facebook, we see that he came up with the idea of creating the social media giant whilst he was at Harvard University alongside his friends who were  interested in software development. It would have been a different case if he was hanging around with drug addicts in a small community college.

We have also heard about the  the saying, “ Behind a successful man is a woman, behind her is his wife”. The former president of the United States of America Mr Barack Obama testified this to be true in his victorious  speech praising his wife Michelle Obama  when he said, “ I wouldn’t be the man I am today  without the woman who agreed to marry me 20 years ago.”

The famous comedian Steve Harvey once said that if you hang around with nine broke people, you are definitely going to be the tenth one. So if we ever find ourselves always complaining, broke, arguing a lot in  relationships and dissatisfied with our careers it is time to reflect on the daily choices we make for ourselves on who we hang around with a lot.

Diet

I have heard people say, “ You are what you eat.” I always ignored this saying and I thought that people were just saying it just for the fun of it. However when I became an independent adult and having the full responsibility on taking care of myself , I realized that I began to gain weight. Not only did this affect my self confidence but it also affected my health as well.

I decided to take charge of my life and I started to eat healthy foods and visited the gym. One of my friends had problems with high blood pressure due to being overweight and she ended up becoming depressed, the culprit being the food she simply chose to eat on a daily basis.

Social Media

We are who we follow on social media be it Facebook, Snapchat, Instagram, Twitter and cetera. Social media plays a vital role in our lives today from updating us on the latest news, celebrity gossip, our friends’ activities, television shows and the list goes on.

If you always follow stories about violence, divorce, depression, drugs and fake friends. You will find yourself lost, angry, bitter and if you are married chances are you are likely to get a divorce too. However if you follow motivational pages such as Goalcast, Born Realist and look for mentors you will realize that your life will become more fun and fulfilling.

My dear friends, sisters, fathers, mothers and brothers, let us take this golden opportunity to reflect on our daily decisions and make adjustments if we are not happy with the end result. Remember it is never too late to create a life you have always wanted and we only live once in this short life so why not live it in the best way possible😍
